An Intrathermocline Eddy Observed in the Northeastern Bay of Bengal

چکیده

An intrathermocline eddy (ITE) was detected to the northwest of Preparis Channel by in situ measurements January 2018. The ITE had a horizontal extent approximately 200 km and maximum velocity 60 cm/s at core depths between 75 130 m. This generated transformation from preexisting surface-intensified anticyclonic (SAE). blocking northeast monsoon Arakan Yoma Mountains resulted weak wind stress on leeward side mountains. caused positive Ekman pumping around together with wind-driven upwelling, shoaling upper thermocline SAE, thus turning it into an ITE. Among 71 eddies Argo profiles 2003 2018, 60% were ITEs, indicating that could be main source for generation Bay Bengal.

An Intrathermocline Eddy and a tropical cyclone in the Bay of Bengal

The Bay of Bengal, subjected to monsoonal forcing and tropical cyclones, displays a complex field of ocean eddies. On 5 December 2013 a sub-surface vortex or Intrathermocline Eddy (ITE) composed of water characteristic of the Andaman Sea was observed within the thermocline of the western Bay of Bengal. We propose that the ITE was the product of Tropical Cyclone Lehar interaction on 27 November ...

Some salient features of the atmosphere observed over the north Bay of Bengal during BOBMEX

This paper describes the near surface characteristics and vertical variations based on the observations made at 17.5◦N and 89◦E from ORV Sagar Kanya in the north Bay of Bengal during the Bay of Bengal Monsoon Experiment (BOBMEX) carried out in July –August 1999. BOBMEX captured both the active and weak phases of convection. SST remained above the convection threshold throughout the BOBMEX. Whil...

BAY OF BENGAL PROGRAMME Marine Fishery ResourcesManagement

INTRODUCTION Like most other biologists, fishery biologists often encounter situations where mixtures of distributions need to be separated into their component distributions. Such situations arise when, for example, the counts of different-sizedova in a fish gonad have to be separated into batches that willbe spawned successively, when length-frequencydata have to be separated into age groups o...

Bay of Bengal nutrient-rich benthic layer

A nutrientand carbon-rich, oxygen-poor benthic layer is observed in the lower 100m of the central and western Bay of Bengal, at depths between 3400 to 4000m. The observed ratios for the biogeochemical anomalies in the benthic layer water are similar to those observed for phytoplankton blooms in open oceans and hence suggest that the source of the high silica, phosphate, nitrate and carbon is li...
